TriCo’s Pretreatment Coordinator administers the Utility's Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) program which includes researching, evaluating data and preparing the ordinance. Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) are a hidden but dangerous pollutant in our community. The Utility has taken the initiative to educate its customers on the harmful effects of FOG and the preventative steps our customers need to take to help prevent the damages caused by FOG. As a part of TriCo’s community outreach efforts, our staff participates in CarmelFest, Carmel Safety Day, and the Zionsville Fall Festival each year. They distribute educational materials and talk about the wastewater process and how FOG can be controlled. To assist customers in properly disposing of fats, oils and grease we offer several household giveaways to help keep your drains clear and flowing. If you would like to order these items for pick-up, please visit the request center.
Although restaurants are the more regulated, when it comes to FOG, the most uncontrolled discharge actually comes from residential areas. Here are a few ways for our customers to help with this growing problem:
- Do not pour grease down your sink.
- Only flush the 3 P’s (pee, poo, toilet paper) down your toilet.
- Do not put food scraps down your drain.
- Garbage disposals are not trash cans
- Wipe your dishes into the trash prior to washing
- Always keep in mind that just because grease waste is leaving the sink with no problem, that does not mean that it will not start creating a problem down the road for you, your neighbor and your community.
