Sewer service issues are normally very specific questions. There is a list of applicable questions addressed in the Sewer Service Issues FAQs. The Utility is a member of the Indiana 811 program. Indiana law requires that you "Call Before You Dig" at least two working days (48 hours) before underground excavations. Call Indiana 811 at (800)-382-5544 and give them the information on where and when you plan to dig. The Utility will mark the locations of sewer mains or laterals in the public right of way. Laterals are the property owner's responsibility and will not be marked.
If you see signs in your neighborhood indicating there will be sewer line maintenance in the area, the maintenance is usually sewer cleaning. The Utility has a three-year rotation schedule for line cleaning, ensuring all lines are cleaned at least every three years. The signs provide a date range rather than specific dates to allow for sewer emergencies and weather-related delays. The sewer cleaning goes from manhole to manhole and does not include cleaning of the lateral to your home. The cleaning typically goes unnoticed. However, as a precaution, you should keep the lids on your toilets closed to avoid a splash out if air happens to come through the line.
